4. Johnny the Gunner

The B-17 tail gunner’s turret was a pretty tight spot.

So they left their parachutes where they wouldn’t be forgot.

Johnny was the first defense for an attack from the back.

He also was most likely to get hit from that attack.

They were over Germany when the fighters appeared.

Their cannons blasted holes as they neared.

The plane was on fire. Suddenly Johnny was free.

He was blown out, pretty bad you’d agree.

He tumbled about as the cold wind blasted him.

Reaching terminal velocity, it looked pretty grim.

Now after the first hundred feet or so,

It doesn’t matter how far you go.

Johnny fell 10,000 feet it was later found.

There was time to think, a minute to hit the ground.

He was over a forested area with fir trees tall.

Johnny snapped branches going down. This broke his fall.

After he hit the round, he was rather sore,

But there were no broken bones nor any gore.

Later he was picked up by a German patrol.

They wouldn’t believe the story he told.

He finished his service as a prisoner of war.

Johnny has the unbroken record in our lore

For the no parachute distance fallen survivor score.
